These recent finds, located in the Troll and Sleipner areas – two of Norway’s most strategically vital offshore production hubs – benefit from their proximity to existing infrastructure, enabling rapid and cost-effective development. The initial discovery, designated Byrding C, occurred approximately five kilometers northwest of the Fram field within the extended Troll zone, and is conservatively estimated to hold between 4 and 8 million barrels of recoverable oil. Equinor indicated that the resource will likely be developed utilizing current or planned infrastructure in the region.

Subsequently, the Frida Kahlo well was drilled from the Sleipner B platform within the Sleipner area, and it is estimated to contain 5 to 9 million barrels of oil equivalent, comprising gas and condensate. The company anticipates bringing this well into production as early as April, highlighting the inherent advantages of developing resources immediately adjacent to established facilities.

These discoveries directly align with Equinor’s strategic focus on near-field exploration undertaken around these core production hubs. Meanwhile, the Sleipner area has witnessed a series of recent discoveries. The last four exploration wells—Lofn, Langemann, Sissel, and Frida Kahlo—all encountered gas and condensate deposits, with combined resources estimated to range from 55 to 140 million barrels of oil equivalent. Equinor characterized these results as a direct outcome of a deliberately targeted exploration campaign aimed at identifying residual resources within this mature basin.

Sleipner continues to function as a central hub for gas exports from Norway to Europe. The facilities process hydrocarbon production from numerous neighboring fields, transporting dry gas through pipelines to major European receiving terminals, including Zeebrugge, Easington, and Draupner. The hub also processes hydrocarbons from fields such as Sigyn, Utgard, Gudrun, and Gina Krog, while unstable oil is transported to the Kårstø processing and export facility.

The extended operational lifespan of infrastructure within mature basins has become increasingly vital as Europe continues to depend on Norwegian gas supplies, particularly in light of reduced deliveries from Russian pipelines. Equinor attributes its successful exploration outcomes in both the Troll and Sleipner areas to advancements in seismic imaging technology. Specifically, the utilization of Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) seismic surveys, 4D seismic monitoring, and the comprehensive reprocessing of existing datasets have substantially enhanced the company’s understanding of the subsurface structures, facilitating the identification of smaller deposits that might have previously gone unnoticed in these extensively explored regions.

Several discoveries within the Sleipner area are anticipated to be developed through subsea tie-backs to existing platforms, allowing for production initiation within a timeframe of two to three years. The Frida Kahlo well presents a quicker path to production, due to its direct drilling origin from the Sleipner B platform. The Troll field – utilizing the Troll A, B, and C platforms – holds approximately 40% of Norway’s remaining gas reserves, solidifying its position as one of the most strategically significant assets on the Norwegian continental shelf. These near-field discoveries—such as Byrding C and the recent Sleipner finds—play a critical role in maximizing recovery from these mature systems and extending the operational life of these essential export infrastructure assets.

As Europe prioritizes energy security and dependable gas supplies, incremental discoveries in established offshore hubs remain a significant component of Norway’s upstream strategy.
