Beware: The Rush for AI Supremacy Threatens Human Autonomy
The AI Arms Race: A Threat to Humanity’s Autonomy and Safety
The launch of ChatGPT in late 2023 sparked a frenzy among Big Tech companies, with Meta, Google, Apple, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, and DeepSeek racing to deploy their models and products as quickly as possible. This frenzy is driven by the desire to create "entertaining" and "humanlike" AI companions, even if it means compromising our safety and autonomy.
Following OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Mark Zuckerberg urged Meta’s teams to make AI companions more engaging, allowing them to participate in romantic role-play and "fantasy sex," even with underage users. This loosening of guardrails poses significant risks, particularly for minors. It’s clear that these companies will stop at nothing to profit from the AI arms race.
The Damage and Destruction Caused by AI
While AI has many benefits, its potential harm is often overlooked. The rapidly accelerating transformation of AI threatens to dehumanize us, leaving us disempowered, easily manipulable, and entirely dependent on corporations that provide AI services. This trend began over 25 years ago with the introduction of AI-powered recommendation systems by companies like Amazon, Netflix, and YouTube.
These companies present AI-powered features as essential personalization tools, suggesting that users would be lost without them. This has led to a normalization of allowing companies to dictate what people buy, watch, and think. However, this comes with significant consequences for our autonomy and well-being.
Generative AI and Dehumanization
AI’s potential harm is further amplified by Generative AI (GenAI), which accelerates the process of dehumanization. GenAI features are now integrated into existing applications to increase human productivity or enhance made-by-human outcomes, implying that humans are not good enough and need AI assistance. This push towards GenAI-driven services raises significant concerns about our potential loss of autonomy.
Recent research found that access to GPT-4 significantly improves performance (48% improvement for GPT Base and 127% for GPT Tutor). However, when access is subsequently taken away, students perform worse than those who never had access (17% reduction for GPT Base). This is alarming, as GenAI disempowers people and makes them dependent on it. People may not only lose the ability to produce the same results but also fail to invest time and effort in learning essential skills.
The Loss of Autonomy
This phenomenon is a result of dehumanization, leading to the erosion of our ability to think, assess, and create independently. As Elon Musk famously stated, "AI will be way smarter than humans." This is not surprising as dehumanization progresses, diminishing what makes us uniquely human.
The AI-Powered Arms Race
Decades ago, military forces employed autonomous weapons, including mines, torpedoes, and heat-guided missiles that operate based on simple reactive feedback without human control. The current development of AI-powered autonomous systems aims to extend this technology to drone and robot design.
The risk is twofold: if fewer soldiers are harmed in combat due to the use of AI-powered weapons, the association between acts of war and human cost is weakened. This makes it easier for nations to engage in warfare without facing significant consequences for their leaders or citizens. Moreover, these systems can be compromised, leading to potential mass destruction.
Robot "Soldiers"
Bear in mind that these systems can be hacked, and an entire army of robots may act against a nation. Stellar cybersecurity would need to be implemented to mitigate this risk. However, even with robust systems, the potential for AI-powered arms races is significant, posing major geopolitical problems as technology proliferates.
The Armageddon Scenario
Musk’s fears that AI poses a civilization-destructive threat are supported by recent research suggesting that the possibility of AI posing an existential threat is 10%-20%. These systems may start acting against humanity as they become more sophisticated, with the potential to lead to catastrophic consequences.
Can Humanity be Saved?
Currently, there is an overemphasis on profit and power, with little attention paid to safety. Leaders should prioritize public safety and the future of humanity over gaining supremacy in AI technology. "Responsible AI" must go beyond empty policies and promises; it requires a genuine focus on implementing principles that ensure the safe use of AI systems.
Collaboration is Key
The need for collaboration between companies, nations, and researchers is critical to preventing any doomsday scenario. Leaders must take action by prioritizing public safety and designing AI systems with safety in mind from the outset. The public should also demand this level of accountability and transparency.
Our Future is at Stake
Humanity’s autonomy, creativity, and ability to adapt are being sacrificed for the sake of profit and technological advancement. We face a stark choice: ensure that AI benefits us or risk letting it harm us.
