Bitcoin’s Surge: Crypto Market Rockets, Avoiding Turmoil in 2024
The cryptocurrency industry experienced a remarkable resurgence in 2024, fueled by a Bitcoin bull run that pushed BTC’s market price above $100,000, restoring investor confidence and delivering substantial returns across the crypto market. Amid the numerous significant milestones achieved throughout the year, it is easy to overlook the major challenges that industry players and investors faced and successfully navigated. The cryptocurrency industry has demonstrated consistent resilience over the years, meeting challenges such as bad actors, ecosystem collapses, bear markets, legal disputes and geopolitical uncertainties. This adaptability positions the industry for continued evolution and potential disruptions in the future. Additionally, certain decisions by individuals and authorities had uniquely detrimental impacts. Here, we explore some of the most significant challenges the crypto ecosystem collectively overcame in 2024.
Germany’s experience highlighted the volatility inherent in cryptocurrency investments. In July 2024, the German government decided to urgently sell approximately 49,858 Bitcoin – part of previously seized holdings – for roughly $2.6 billion. This decision, prompted by an assessment that Bitcoin’s value might fall by more than 10%, was intended as an emergency measure. However, Bitcoin’s price subsequently surged, reaching an all-time high six months later. This outcome resulted in a significant unrealized gain for countries like Bhutan and El Salvador, which continued to hold their Bitcoin investments.
Despite increased cryptocurrency adoption, the growth of the crypto ATM network remained stagnant. Global crypto ATM installations comprised approximately 36,500 machines in January 2024, increasing to 38,600 machines by the end of the year. This slow growth reflects increased regulatory scrutiny and efforts to combat illicit activities associated with crypto ATMs. While countries like Australia doubled their ATM network to nearly 1,400 machines in 2024, the total number of global ATMs has remained relatively constant at around 38,000 machines since 2022, suggesting a need for clearer regulations and operational licenses to encourage broader adoption.
The Bitcoin Runes protocol, launched in April 2024, aimed to improve the non-fungible token inscription ecosystem. Initially, Runes transactions dominated the Bitcoin blockchain, accounting for approximately 60% of the entire bandwidth during the first two months. This increased demand momentarily supported miners’ income amid reduced rewards due to the fourth halving event. However, by July, daily transactions dedicated to Runes declined significantly, with Runes representing roughly 5% of all transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain by December. Ordinals regained prominence, taking the most bandwidth on the blockchain.
Regulatory bodies worldwide intensified their efforts to oversee the cryptocurrency industry. This resulted in the closure of several well-established crypto exchanges as authorities sought to protect citizens from fraud and ensure compliance with anti-money laundering regulations. China continued its 2022 crypto ban, while Hong Kong imposed a strict licensing regime, forcing exchanges to apply for operational licenses by May 2024. In India, 17 crypto exchanges, including Binance, WazirX, and CoinDCX, were flagged for non-payment and GST tax evasion, owing the Indian government a total of $97 million.
Several high-profile legal battles involving Binance executives and the exchange itself underscored the challenges of navigating complex regulatory landscapes. Changpeng Zhao, the founder and former CEO of Binance, admitted to violating the Bank Secrecy Act and failing to implement an effective anti-money laundering program, resulting in a four-month prison sentence. Tigran Gambaryan, Binance’s compliance officer, faced tax and money laundering charges in Nigeria, but was released after the Nigerian government dropped all charges. Despite these legal challenges, Binance retained investor confidence and maintained its position as the leading cryptocurrency exchange globally.
The events of 2024 illustrate the considerable hurdles facing the cryptocurrency industry. The industry’s demonstrated resilience and adaptability in overcoming legal challenges, market volatility, and operational complexities highlight the path forward. As global adoption continues to grow, and as regulations become clearer, the lessons learned from 2024 will continue to shape the industry and promote a more sustainable, inclusive, and innovative financial ecosystem.
