Burry Magnifies Interest in Physical Gold ETF Investment
Michael Burry, the famed hedge fund manager known for his successful “short” bet against subprime mortgage-backed securities during the 2007-2008 financial crisis, has recently increased his exposure to gold through a Canadian physical gold fund. This move is being closely watched by investors and analysts alike, as it represents a significant shift in strategy for Burry’s firm, Scion Asset Management. The firm’s latest filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revealed holdings in Sprott Physical Gold (PHYS), a closed-end fund registered in Canada, marking a notable change in investment focus.
The SEC’s filing, a quarterly report required for firms managing at least $100 million in assets, highlighted the substantial investment. The largest physical gold exchange-traded fund, SPDR Gold Shares (GLD), has seen a remarkable surge in the past three months, climbing over 19%, significantly outperforming the S&P 500’s gain of just over 6%, as measured by the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY). This performance underscores the growing interest in gold as an investment.
Several factors may have driven Burry’s decision to invest in a physical gold fund during the first quarter of 2024. Primarily, investors are grappling with persistent inflation. Inflation has been a significant concern, with rising prices eroding the purchasing power of currencies. Gold is traditionally viewed as an inflation hedge, historically demonstrating an upward trend in value as currencies lose their purchasing strength. Investors are seeking to protect their portfolios from the effects of inflation by allocating a portion of their assets to gold.
Beyond inflation, heightened economic uncertainty and ongoing geopolitical tensions have created a “flight to safety” among investors. The continued conflict in Ukraine and the ongoing concerns surrounding the Israel/Palestine war have fueled anxieties, prompting investors to seek secure assets. Gold, perceived as a safe-haven investment, benefits from such uncertainty, as investors prioritize preserving their wealth. Furthermore, gold is often denominated in U.S. dollars, and a weakening USD can make gold cheaper for foreign investors, increasing demand and driving up prices.
Central banks worldwide, particularly those in China, have been substantial gold buyers in recent years. This consistent demand from central banks plays a vital role in supporting and potentially increasing the price of gold. Finally, with expectations that the Federal Reserve will begin cutting interest rates in 2024, the returns offered by traditional fixed-income investments are dwindling. Gold, which doesn’t generate regular income, becomes relatively more attractive, especially as investors seek higher returns.
Currently, physical gold ETFs offer investors a convenient and secure method to gain exposure to the gold price without the logistical challenges of physically storing gold. Several ETFs provide access to this market, with Sprott Physical Gold (PHYS) and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) being prominent examples. As of May 15, 2024, key physical gold ETFs include: SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) with an expense ratio of 0.40% and an AUM of $63.2 billion, boasting a 3-month return of 18.98%, iShares Gold Trust (IAU) with an expense ratio of 0.25% and an AUM of $28.9 billion, achieving a 3-month return of 18.98%, and SPDR Gold MiniShares (GLD) with an expense ratio of 0.10% and an AUM of $7.3 billion, returning 19.04% over the past three months. Other notable funds include the Abrdn Physical Gold Shares ETF (SGOL) with a 0.17% expense ratio and an AUM of $3.2 billion, and the iShares Gold Trust Micro (IAU) with a 0.09% expense ratio and an AUM of $1.2 billion, producing a return of 19.04%.
Looking ahead, the future trajectory of gold prices will be heavily influenced by the evolving factors mentioned above. If the Federal Reserve delivers on its anticipated interest rate cuts, geopolitical tensions persist, and inflation remains a concern, the price of gold could continue its upward trend. Conversely, a stabilization of the economic climate or a strengthening of the U.S. dollar could potentially lead to a decline in the gold price. Ultimately, physical gold ETFs offer a viable and accessible strategy for investors to gain exposure to the gold market, allowing them to diversify their portfolios and potentially benefit from the unique characteristics of this precious metal.
