FOMC Meeting May Spark U-Turn for US Dollar and Rate Cut Expectations
The Fate of the FOMC Meeting: Will the Fed Keep Rates Steady or Cut?
The Federal Reserve is set to meet today amidst growing expectations that it will maintain its current interest rates and adopt a cautious approach. Market participants are eagerly awaiting the Fed’s decision, with many anticipating subtle shifts in rhetoric that could indicate changes in the long-term policy trajectory.
At the center of attention is the "dot plot," which provides insight into the Fed’s projections for future rate cuts. Chair Jerome Powell’s press conference will also offer crucial clues about when and how the Fed might start cutting rates. The meeting comes at a pivotal moment for financial markets, as weakening US data has led to increased recessionary fears and rising inflation expectations.
As the Fed weighs its decision-making process, it must consider several critical economic factors. Inflation trends continue to trend positively but still pose concerns for policymakers. Labor market observations indicate cooling job creation and wage growth, which are essential components of the Fed’s dual mandate of maximum employment and price stability. Consumer sentiment has also dipped to a 29-month low, posing a challenge for policy makers.
The Economic Landscape: A Mixed Picture
The broad economic indicators provide a mixed picture, complicating the Fed’s policy choices. Housing market data, retail sales, and manufacturing output all present differing trends that require careful analysis by policymakers.
The current inflation trends are worth examining in detail (1). While CPI has been trending positively, it remains below the 2% target (Table 1). The Fed must weigh the ongoing disparities across sectors and avoid cutting rates too soon. Otherwise, inflation could resurface at an uncertain pace.
| Month | CPI Target |
| — | — |
| January 2025 | 2.4% |
| February 2025 | 2.3% |
| March 2025 | 2.1% |
The labor market is another crucial aspect that policymakers consider (2). Unemployment rates remain at historical lows, but job creation has slowed down in recent periods.
Inflationary Pressures: Rising Expectations
Market participants are also showing higher inflation expectations for the next 12 months. With unknown impacts of universal tariffs, the Fed must tread carefully, avoiding commitments that could be seen as overly dovish. The strong labor market gives policymakers no compelling reason to adopt a more accommodative stance.
In fact (3), investors have increased short-term interest rate cut expectations by nearly 50% since last month’s FOMC meeting. Markets place around 59 bps of rate cuts through December 2025, surpassing previous forecasts of just 49 bps.
It remains to be seen whether the FOMC proves to be a turning point for financial markets or merely reinforces cautious rhetoric from Powell and other Fed officials (4).
Powell’s Press Conference: A Crucial Signal
Traders will closely scrutinize Chair Powell’s comments, not just the data-driven decision. His statement promises to offer key insights into future policy direction and hints at the timing for potential rate adjustments.
The exact wording of the Fed statement could potentially reveal subtle shifts in policymaker views or provide vital cues that may influence market reaction (5). Powell has expressed a careful approach, emphasizing decisions based on incoming data and flexibility.
A hint from policymakers would offer markets additional clarity to navigate upcoming economic developments amidst Geopolitical uncertainty.
Technical Analysis
From a technical standpoint (6), the USD DXY has been exhibiting mixed signals. Since peaking in early January 2025 at record territory above the psychological 105 mark, the currency’s slide toward historical lows has raised concerns that some markets might become overly aggressive with trading calls on FOMC.
However, an intriguing divergence appears between price action and RSI metrics when focusing solely upon this specific time frame. Price has made successive new-lows amidst strengthening USD DXY, whereas indicator readings depict relatively stable performance without major damage (fig 7). Such RSI divergence can prompt speculative buying that might otherwise remain on sidelines following extreme losses.
Divergence in action – Price vs RSI:
- Lower low price with higher high RSI
- Indicates recovery prospects increasing even after bearish momentum experienced recently.
Key levels DXY remains important (Table 4)
| Level | Target |
| — | — |
| Support | 103.181|
| Resistance | 103.651|
The Federal Reserve will likely announce that their interest rates remain steady for now, with a cautious approach to guide them in the future months of 2025.
There is still much uncertainty surrounding financial markets worldwide and especially US Dollar recovery prospects after current losses over last week’s data releases; perhaps an increase of potential rate cuts has given more reasons optimism amongst speculators.
