S&P 500 Reaches Record High, Fueled by US Economic Data
The S&P 500 Index (SPY), Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA), and Nasdaq 100 Index (QQQ) experienced a robust rally on Friday, culminating in new all-time highs for the S&P 500. March E-mini S&P 500 futures (ESH26) and Nasdaq futures (NQH26) also advanced significantly. The market’s positive sentiment was fueled by resilient US economic data, including a declining unemployment rate and rising average hourly earnings, despite weaker-than-expected nonfarm payrolls. The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index also jumped, adding further support. Several sectors rallied, with chipmakers and data storage companies leading the gains. Notably, home builders and building suppliers benefited from President Trump’s call for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to purchase $200 billion in mortgage bonds. Power producers soared following Meta Platforms’ agreement for electricity deals for its data centers.
The market’s enthusiasm was further bolstered by gains in global equity markets, including a record high for Europe’s Euro Stoxx 50 and a 10.5-year high for China’s Shanghai Composite Stock Index. However, uncertainty lingered as the Supreme Court deferred its ruling on the legality of President Trump’s tariffs until Wednesday. Despite weaker-than-expected US December payrolls and rising inflation expectations, the overall market trend remained bullish.
Key economic data released on Friday contributed to the positive momentum. The December unemployment rate fell to 4.4%, indicating a strong labor market, while average hourly earnings continued to rise, exceeding expectations. The University of Michigan’s January Consumer Sentiment Index reached a high of 54.0, reflecting increased optimism among consumers. These strong economic indicators reduced the likelihood of an immediate Fed interest rate cut.
Several companies reported significant gains on Friday. Chipmakers, including Sandisk, Intel, Lam Research, and Applied Materials, drove gains in the S&P 500, while data storage companies also saw considerable increases. Home builders like Builders FirstSource, Lennar, PulteGroup, and DR Horton benefited from the government’s efforts to stimulate the housing market. Power producers, including Vistra and NuScale Power, rose sharply following Meta Platforms’ electricity deals for its data centers. Furthermore, Lockheed Martin and Carvana experienced significant price increases, supported by analyst upgrades.
The market’s bullish sentiment was further reinforced by a generally positive global trading environment. The Euro Stoxx 50 reached a record high, and China’s Shanghai Composite climbed to a 10.5-year high.
Looking ahead, the market is discounting a 5% chance of a 25 basis point rate cut at the Federal Reserve’s next meeting on January 27-28.
