Short Squeeze Sensation: Why FFAI’s Electric Stock is Defying Bears

Short Squeeze Sensation: Why FFAI’s Electric Stock is Defying Bears

Electric vehicle stocks have experienced significant volatility in 2025, driven primarily by changes in clean energy policies. While prominent players like Tesla (TSLA) and Rivian (RIVN) frequently draw attention, smaller EV companies such as Faraday Future Intelligent Electric (FFAI) have become targets for short sellers looking to capitalize on their difficulties.

However, high short interest often has an unintended effect, fueling potential rallies when traders rush to cover their bets. As seen in the case of Faraday Future, this phenomenon is not unprecedented and can significantly influence market sentiment.Faraday Future Intelligent Electric (FFAI) stock rose to a six-month high on July 24 after experiencing increased buying pressure from retail "meme" trading, prompting short sellers scramble to adjust their positions. With over a quarter of its float being held by short sellers, FFAI’s recent rally has been further amplified by this trading activity.

The surge in the stock price can be attributed to various factors, including:

  • Strong retail support with significant buying pressure from individual investors.

  • A sharp increase in short interest in recent days, with some analysts suggesting that short sellers may have underestimated the company’s potential.

Despite these developments, FFAI remains a speculative investment due to ongoing challenges facing the company. These include concerns over production delays, cash flow management issues, and overall liquidity struggles. To get ahead of market shifts like these, sign up for Barchart’s morning newsletter and stay informed about market trends before everyone else gets in on the action.

About Faraday Future Stock

Founded in 2014 with primary operations in California, Faraday Future designs and manufactures electric vehicles. Currently, they have a relatively small marketplace presence valued at around $228 million.Last week, shares of Faraday Future Intelligent Electric saw an extraordinary surge as a result of being swept up in the wave of retail "meme" trading, rising by 44% on that single day. Despite this jump in stock price FFAI remains down by 6.6 percent throughout this calendar year as concerns about production delays and cash flow continue to have a negative impact on investor confidence.Even with a strong sales record, the company has yet to generate meaningful revenue due to its continuous efforts to scale up manufacturing capability and reach out to more investors. In Q1 2025, Faraday reported minor revenue of $300 thousand from two FF 91 vehicles delivered along with a net loss of $43.7 million. Cash levels remain minimal. According to the March 31 balance sheet, unrestricted cash stood at a mere $9.25 million while total net assets were $141.2 million following a substantial influx of funding.

To ensure its cash reserves continue growing Faraday announced in July that it had secured an additional $105 million financing through mostly short-term convertible securities as well as warrants with major institutional investors joining the deal early on, namely Master Investment Group which took part in the initial closing phase resulting in around $82 million of capital. As a consequence of this move liquidity should largely alleviate any current strain on its financial condition.

Deliveries remain low, with only 10 units sold in 2023 and an equally small number of four in 2024, but deliveries have been relatively steady lately with two cars delivered to customers earlier this calendar year — one FF 91 was placed in California while the other is located in New York. At this point there isn’t enough publicly available data yet to give any specific insights on whether this positive trend will continue into Q2 as well.Deliveries are a key indicator of revenue growth for the company but at present both numbers remain relatively low, thus causing some tension among financial analysts who have been following these events closely.

The Bottom Line

Beneath a surface marred by market hype Faraday Future still faces significant uncertainties. Financial performance is underwhelming due to a lack of substantial income and few automobiles being sold on the open market. Given its low stock price multiple delisting warnings from Nasdaq and missed disclosure deadlines, further risks appear to loom over this company’s prospects in coming months while investors must balance potential benefits with these fundamental risks on the table.
